Abeno: The Okonomi-yaki Experince
FOOD! FOOD! FOOD! OMG i LOVE FOOD
So…few weeks back my friend uploaded a picture of okonomi-yaki. She had just come back from Japan and was craving it already. So some guy on her Facebook suggested a restaurant called Abeno. We decided to go check it out, we managed to gather about 7 other people. It was pretty packed out when we got there for like 1.30pm. I have to admit the place was well adorable.

“Okonomiyaki (お好み焼き o-konomi-yaki?) (
listen (help·info)) is a Japanese savoury pancake containing a variety of ingredients. The name is derived from the word okonomi, meaning “what you like” or “what you want”, and yakimeaning “grilled” or “cooked” (cf. yakitori and yakisoba). Okonomiyaki is mainly associated with Kansai or Hiroshima areas of Japan, but is widely available throughout the country. Toppings and batters tend to vary according to region. Tokyo okonomiyaki is usually smaller than a Hiroshima or Kansai okonomiyaki.”

They had laid out the tables for us after like 20-30 minute, Even then, we were split up on to two tables. But this wasn't due to the service been slow, it was due to the fact that it was so busy. its usually better when there is only two or three people but we were happy to wait till the tables cleared.
So the best thing about this was that they cook the okonomi-yaki on your tables, it don’t take much to amuse me, i was sooooo excited like a little girl. It was amazing. the tables had like this grill in the middle (silver rectangle in the picture below). i was a bit scared, im so clumsy and i know id end up burning something.
We had to wait a while but it was worth the wait. I orderd of the lunch timemenu. The lunch A had a selection of okonomi-yaki, miso soup and a side dish (which is a side dish of the day if i remember correctly)
The okonomi-yaki i chose was the Osaka mix, this was bacon, prawn and kimichi (korean dish made of pickled cabbage). But because i don’t eat bacon, pork or ham. i asked them to remove the bacon, i was really pleased to know that it was possible. They happily removed it without question. Some places you go to if you try and deduct something from recipe they start crying. So after the mixtures placed on the Grill they cover it up.
Once the okonomi-yaki was cooked. They decorated it with japanese mayo (apprently this was ment to be slightly sweeter then normal mayo and rare to find), Some sauce i can remember the name but it was apparently made from fruit extracts. They also put seaweed powder and fish flakes on top.
It was a bit tricky cutting into, But it tasted really nice.

My Friend on the left was the party leader lol and the one on the right, well i managed to drag her with us lol
me and my friends, i know i look like death but at that point i was quite unwell…. dont worry it had nothing to do with the okonomi-yaki lol
I know the picture quality is a bit crappy, i didn't have my DSLR with me, so my Samsung S2 had to do.
I really hope you guys go and check this place out, its actually amazing, the okonomiyaki and the dumplings are what they cook on your table for you. They do have other items on their menu. You should defiantly go just for the experience.
I did go back there later on. After around 3pm although the lunch menu wasn't available, the good new was their was no queuing and waiting around. This time i ordered the prawn gyozas and the spinach and cheese okonomi-yaki. That is probably one of the safer choices if your quite fussy when it comes to trying different food.
Until next time
